Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has threw his weight behind organized labor’s demand for a ₦500,000 monthly national minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
Sowore made his position known on Friday through a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
Labor’s New Stance Aligns with AAC Policy. The human rights activist noted that the ₦500,000 benchmark matches the long-standing policy position of the AAC. His comments follow a joint demand by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) during the Nigeria Rights of Workers Summit held on Thursday in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
Reacting to labor’s announcement, Sowore stated:
“Oh finally! It is encouraging that the leadership of the NLC and TUC have finally arrived at the same position the African Action Congress adopted long ago. Nigerian workers deserve a national minimum wage of no less than ₦500,000. The demand is both necessary and long overdue in the face of the country’s economic realities and soaring cost of living.”
The AAC leader urged Nigerian workers to transition from making mere declarations to taking decisive, unified action to secure a living wage.
He also challenged the electorate to use their voting power to elect leaders who genuinely prioritize the welfare of citizens, rather than politicians who consistently view the working class as adversaries
